Panthers HC Dave Canales admits team is looking to add another quarterback

Though Bryce Young and Andy Dalton are quarterbacks one and two on the depth chart, Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales admitted the team is keeping its ear to the streets in finding a third signal caller.

Currently, the third quarterback on the Panthers roster is Jack Plummer, an undrafted free agent who signed with Carolina before rookie minicamp. Canales, however, still has his eyes on more quarterbacks.

"We would still have our ears to the ground and see if there’s anybody that might be interested in coming and being a part of what we’re doing,” Canales said Saturday, following the completion of rookie minicamp. "What we always like to do is to add people, especially guys that have some kind of exposure to our system. I’m looking for value for the quarterback room. What do they bring for that room? For Bryce, in particular.”

Another quarterback would not mean competition for Young. Canales has said repeatedly that the second-year quarterback will be the go-to starter in 2024.

The additional depth at quarterback would be a help to Young, as he would hear additional voices in the quarterback room.

Carolina is clearly in asset-gathering mode. Anyone who can play deserves to be looked at. and it is a nice reminder that when a team is retooling, often that means adding depth to positions several people assumed were accounted for.
